First Move Poetry Contest

‘April is the cruelest month,’ so goes the opening line to T.S. Eliot’s famous poem The Waste Land.  But April and poetry can also be a fun month with it being National Poetry Month.  Poetry is a great tool to enhance language skills for all students – and here at First Move, we’d like to promote those skills with our annual poetry competition.  All second and third-grade students currently participating in the First Move Program are eligible and encouraged to write and submit their own poem about Chess.

Contest Guidelines:  Teachers may choose to introduce the First Move Poetry  Contest through a class lesson on poetry or may opt to send the directions home as an optional at-home activity.  POEMS MUST BE ABOUT CHESS.

Poems MUST not be longer than one page in length

All poems MUST include student’s name, school, teacher’s name and grade level

Poems will NOT be returned and become the property of First Move
