Microsoft Giving Campaign Chess Festival

October 17th, 2009

America’s Foundation for Chess held the first annual Microsoft Chess Festival. The festival was sponsored by Microsoft’s Giving Campaign and featured International US Chess Champion Hikaru Nakamura, FIDE Master Marcel Milat, and Women’s Grand Master and Olympic Bronze Medalist Katerina Rohonyan. The festival was a platform to raise money for the organization and create awareness about the First Move program.

Hikaru Nakamura and Katerina Rohonyan played impeccably well participating in blindfolded games, and Hikaru reigned supreme playing in the 40 person Simul. Meanwhile Marcel Milat provided an engaging chess lecture and demonstration.

The event proved to be a huge success bringing in donations and getting people excited about our educational chess program. Gene Prentice of Microsoft stated “The event offered a lot of variety, activities, and star power.  It was extremely well organized, and it ran on schedule all day. It was a classy event all around.” Others stated “it far exceeded my (very high) expectations” and “it was a fantastic event!”

Special Thanks

First Move would like to thank Microsoft, and The Microsoft Giving Program, and those who helped  bring the event together and made it such a success!
